Prior to her current post, Deema held various energy roles within fortune 500 companies including Cummins and ConocoPhillips, and Siemens as a Brand Ambassador. She was awarded Graduate of the Year by National Grid following her work in resilience, where she represented National Grid in Climate Resilience panels and was part of a team responding to weather events that impact the viability of the electricity network.
Outside of her career as an engineer, Deema is a Chess player with national TV appearances on BBC Chess Masters: The Endgame. She is passionate about promoting chess as a sport amongst girls across schools in the UK working with the ‘She Plays to Win’ Charity.
Through the Thatcher fellowship, Deema hopes to bridge the gap between the private energy sector and policy makers in Westminster, promoting a pragmatic attitude towards energy security. Additionally, Deema hopes to transfer the spirit of the free political thought of the Thatcher Fellowship to her home country, Iraq, where she grew during the Second Gulf War. She wishes to reimagine the relations between Iraq and Britain – one that is free of the shackles of past wars and based on untapped mutual trade opportunities, two nations eager to rekindle liberty as a cornerstone of their national identity.
