As I approach almost a decade in the City, I have seen first hand the power of private enterprise in solving some of the world’s largest societal and environmental challenges. My work in sustainable finance gives me a unique perspective into this, and how business can be a force for good. And while Britain was an early mover in its own industrial revolution, we as a country can learn a lot from those who have had the benefit of modern science and technologies when pushing ahead with their own development.

There are some truly amazing innovations taking place around the world, with new industries sprouting up and creating new opportunities for growth and development. To maintain its standing in the world, Britain must continue to evolve and adapt to the fast-paced global landscape.

It is this perspective that I am keen to bring forward during my time as a Thatcher Fellow. We are seeing global transformations in areas such as energy, industry, trade and finance. These must form the building blocks for any future government that wants to take the growth and productivity challenge seriously.

I’m particularly excited to have a forum for debate and discussion on these trends with a view to developing new ideas on our old problems. Britain’s place in the world should be as a beacon of the
power of business to bring solutions to today’s problems of weak productivity and low growth.
