The Centre for Policy Studies is delighted to announce the appointment of Lee Rowley as a Research Fellow.
He was most recently Chief of Staff to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and was previously Member of Parliament for North East Derbyshire. While in Parliament, he served as Minister for Housing, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and a government whip.
Drawing on his experiences in government, Rowley will be spearheading a project examining why government so often does not work as politicians hope and the public imagine it should, to be published by the CPS in 2026.
Lee Rowley said:
‘Our country doesn’t just have a set of profound challenges at a policy level in the decade ahead but, in addition, one of getting those policies implemented.
‘For too long there has been a lack of attention to the process and methods of how the state works, or doesn’t, to serve democratically elected governments. The CPS has always led the way on defining and debating the problems our country faces and I am looking forward to contributing to that work, particularly in ensuring we think as much about how we do government in the future, as what we do.’
CPS Director Robert Colvile said:
‘We’re delighted to have Lee joining the CPS. He’s long been one of the deepest and clearest thinkers in British politics, in particular when it comes to the key issue of how you actually get the state to deliver for its citizens.
‘It’s been clear to everyone, under governments of all parties, that things in Whitehall aren’t working as they should. This project will provide not just fresh answers on what’s gone wrong, but concrete ideas for how to fix it.’
