Speaking on the new consulation by the Department for Education and Office for Students on higher education, Robert Colvile, Director of the Centre for Policy Studies, said:
“It is excellent news that the Government is taking action on higher education as we suggested in our report The Value of University. Under the current system, universities are incentivised to run low-cost, high-capacity courses which often do nothing for students’ prospects or the economy. Young people are ripped off by unproductive courses which ultimately waste their time and taxpayers’ money.
“Today’s proposals make good progress on ending this system, by holding universities to account on the outcomes of their courses. By giving the Office for Students powers of oversight, universities can no longer get away with offering low-quality courses – and students stand to benefit the most.”
