Reforms to the Competition and Markets Authority unveiled by ministers last week do not go far enough, the watchdog’s former chairman has warned in a letter to all 650 MPs.
Lord Tyrie, who quit as chairman last year after a boardroom coup, argues that proposed new powers to levy huge fines on businesses that rip off consumers and to strengthen protections for small companies are only “an essential first step”.
