The government is set to announce a new mental health deal for university students, as called for by Helen Whately MP in an essay published by the Centre for Policy Studies, reports The Guardian, Thursday 28 June 2018.
The essay, published as part of the ‘New Blue: Ideas for a New Generation’ collection, highlighted the combination of factors – including financial pressures, educational expectations, loneliness, and alcohol and substance misuse – that can affect university students and lead to mental health concerns.
The essay also looks at how few universities have a comprehensive plan for dealing with student mental health crises and puts forward a number of proposals to help universities so they can better support students.
The new proposals, annouced today by Sam Gymiah, Universities Minister, take on board several of the essay’s proposals including a charter which universities can use to demonstrate to prospective students their commitment to supporting student mental health.
