On Tuesday 19th June the Centre for Policy Studies will host their flagship Margaret Thatcher Conference on China and Britain in the prestigious setting of the Guildhall, London. The conference will address the consequences of China’s rise to global prominence and the future relationship between Britain and China. There will be a particular focus on the future of trade between the two nations.
The conference will hear from several keynote speakers, including the Rt Hon Brandon Lewis MP, Conservative Party Chairman, Carrie Gracie, former BBC China Editor, and Minister Zhu Qin, Deputy Head of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in London, as well as panel discussions. Panellists include former Foreign Secretary, Sir Malcolm Rifkind; Minister of State for Asia & Pacific, Rt Hon Mark Field MP; and Sir Gerry Grimstone, Chairman of Barclays and Standard Life Aberdeen together with senior representatives from HSBC, Aston Martin and the City of London among others.. They will debate a range of issues including the state of the relationship between the UK and China, how ‘Global Britain’ can engage China commercially, and how technological advances – and competition in innovation – will shape the countries’ economies.
“This conference is intended both to examine and to strengthen the relationship between Britain and China.
“As our country leaves the European Union, seeking to strike new trade deals with old friends and new allies, China will play a crucial part in that story.
“Lady Thatcher, our co-founder, would not have recommended China’s system of government for our own. But she knew that cooperation, communication and trade between our nations could bring benefits to all – as is still the case today.”
