Rail competition brings benefits for passengers

Commenting on the publication on the National Rail Passenger Survey, Tony Lodge, research fellow at the Centre for Policy Studies, said:

“Today’s national rail passenger survey shows that when train companies compete on the same track they come top on overall satisfaction, value for money, punctuality and getting a seat.  On the East Coast Main Line Hull Trains, Grand Central, and Virgin all compete to attract passengers and we see them scoring a staggering 97, 94 and 91% satisfaction respectively.

The lesson for Ministers is that they should now encourage much more on-track rail competition in the interests of passengers.  Why is this competition only limited to one main line? On this 25th anniversary of the 1992 White Paper to privatise the old and failing British Rail its time for Conservatives to finally deliver on their original pledge to deliver a competitive railway – these statistics show that the model, when it is allowed to work, is a great success and passengers strongly approve.”
