Tony Lodge reacts to OFGEM's announcement

CPS energy expert Tony Lodge reacts to OFGEM’s announcement that the National Grid may offer businesses a payment in order to reduce their electricity use.

“Ofgem has here declared that the UK is facing a full blown energy crisis.  It risks not having enough electricity generating capacity to cover the post recession increases in electricity demand which are now expected throughout 2014-15-16.

In the national interest it must now ignore the EU Large Combustion Plant Directive which has already closed some of the UK’s large coal and oil fired power stations and allow those which are under sentence of closure to stay open for as long as is necessary to guarantee sufficient margins of electricity supply.  It should look to encourage those plants which have closed to be reactivated.”
