Tobin Tax: golden egg or dead goose?

23/04/2012 - 23/04/2012

In association with The Information Daily.

The CPS will be streaming a debate live online for the first time. On Monday April 23rd ,11:30 – 13:00, we’re hosting a discussion on the Tobin Tax, in conjunction with The Information Daily.

Participants in the discussion include:

  • Andrew Tyrie (Chairman of the UK Parliament’s Treasury Select Committee)
  • Roger Liddle (former adviser to President Barroso)
  • Kay Swinburne MEP (a Conservative MEP on the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs)
  • John Chown (a leading tax expert and the author of a forthcoming CPS paper on the FTT)

Our roundtable participants will be discussing the principle of the ‘Tobin Tax’ and its potential implementation in Europe. They will consider the likely impact on the financial sector and wider economy in the UK and other countries. They will also look at the linked issue of tax harmonisation within the Eurozone area.

We hope that live-streaming the event will enhance audience interaction. And we want you to get involved in the debate as much as possible.

That’s why we’ve set up a dedicated microsite for the event, here: http://tobintax.theinformationdaily.com/home.

The site contains lots of information on the history of the Tobin Tax, the position of many G20 countries on whether it is a good idea or not, some of the key studies that have looked into its feasibility and a host of other resource links to the topic.

But most importantly, the microsite allows you to sign up so that you can interact with us during the debate. By registering here, you can watch live and send us questions which the chair can then put to our panellists. Be sure to also follow the debate on Twitter, using #tobintax and @CPSthinktank @theinfodaily.

Submit your questions via email to: [email protected] in advance, or by Twitter on the day, or let us have you thoughts now on the microsite ‘have your say page’.
